Basically there are three stages of this diet. In the first stage, a diet that has extremely low level of calories is prescribed. In the next stage, slightly more calories are included in the diet, but still the diet continues to be a low calorie diet. In the third stage, some more calories are added to the diet that was suggested for the second stage. Therefore, inclusion of calories in this diet increases progressively.
There are nutritionists who criticize all such low calorie diets. Because of such concerns, the diet has not taken off in the U.S. However, it is quite popular in the United Kingdom.
